Many parents need help, friendship, advice or support during those early years when their children are young. If you have at least one child under five then Home Start can help. Being a parent can be a tough job, and a lack of support from family or friends can lead to isolation.

The Home-Start volunteers are all parents themselves, and offer friendship, support and strategies to help families establish good bedtime routines, manage challenging behaviour, and even finances. Stream Walk Community Garden in Whitstable is a great opportunity to volunteer, get fit ,work alongside lots of different people, in a team or on your own, or just want to sit and watch.

Stream Walk Community Garden teaches healthy living through growing fruit, vegetables and flowers and encourages participatants to try eating new healthy produce on site or take it home as a thank you for their work in the garden to enable them to eat healthily.

Gardening is great physical and mental therapy and we use the sessions to socialise and talk about any difficulties our participants might be facing. For some, it is the one day of the week that they go out. Many of our participants have become paid gardeners or writers inspired by the garden.

• Computer skillls workshops - designed for all ages and abilities, our computer courses are always popular and have covered many topics from using the internet, tracing your family history, to getting the most out of your digital camera.
• Hobby groups - from knitting, to crafts, scrabble and bowls, there is a wide range of interest groups to choose from
• Health and Wellbeing - there are many opportunities here to keep fit and healthy without joining a gym! From our relaxed but popular walk and talk group, to keep fit and dance classes for all ages, check out the timetable to find something to suit your pace.
• Community Events - our hall is a popular venue for many community events, including regular dates such as the farmers market, boot fairs and antique sales and also one-off events like craft fairs.
• Volunteering - there are many opportunites for volunteering at the Umbrella centre, do get in touch if you think you can offer some time whatever your background, it can be a very rewarding experience.
• Community Support - Kent Law school have an outreach clinic based at our centre which can offer free legal advice. Citizens Advice Bureau also run weekly outreach appointments here.

Take Off is running a Peer Support Group group to support positive mental wellbeing for young people aged 17 - 27.

Are you attending university, got an apprenticeship, going to college, working, unemployed, taking time off?

We’ll be looking at a range of different topics, tailored to meet the needs of the members. Topics may include anxiety, depression, worry, finances, relationships and more. This will be a Peer support group designed and lead by you.

The group runs from the Take Off office on Monday afternoons once a month.
