There is a new Kent and Medway based service for diagnosing and supporting adults with autistic spectrum conditions. About three people with suspected autism or Asperger’s Syndrome are currently being referred to the diagnosis team every day.
The new Autistic Spectrum Conditions Service have put together a quick checklist of some key indicators of autism which you can see below:
- I find social situations confusing
- I find it hard to make small talk
- I am good at picking up details and facts
- I find it hard to work out what other people are feeling
- I can focus on certain things for very long periods
- People often say I was rude even when this was unintentional
- I get extremely anxious in new situations
- I do certain things in a very inflexible, repetitive way
- I have always had difficulty making friends
- I tend to turn any conversation back onto myself or my own topic of interest
If more than six of these apply to you, and you don’t have a diagnosis of ADHD or a learning disability, speak to your GP about being referred for an assessment.
